Himalayan Heart was borne from the need for children in Nepal with Autism and intellectual impairment to have the right to an education. In providing that education, Himalayan Heart can also ensure that these children:
- Have access to a learning environment and programmes that are designed individually for each student.
- Be provided with living/life skills and functional academics essential for their involvement and acceptance in to their families and communities.
- Live in a community with understanding and acceptance of intellectual impairments.
- Be part of a lifelong educational facility that meets the needs of students and families – providing support, training, and long term assistance.
Children with Intellectual Impairments have to face every kind of social struggle. They are considered as burdens of the family and society.
As a result, they are deprived of their fundamental rights:
- the right to education,
- the right to express their views,
- the right to freedom of thought,
- the right to protection from abuse,
- the right to a good standard of living.
Education is critical to a child's development and well being. Every child, has the right to an education, which has become the most widely accepted human right. Poverty, blind faiths or habits, which still exist in these societies, prevent them from getting access to any education.
They inevitably have to face difficulties whether they live in urban or rural areas. They are considered a burden, for the family and the society.
They are deprived of essential medicines, proper health care, nutrition or security. As a result, the mortality rate is profoundly higher than the general population. They are deprived of the right to participate in social activities and the right to be treated equally.
